Navigate 1.1.1 – Delineating Between Synchronous and Asynchronous Content Quest

Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning

There are two types of content delivery methods that can be used when teaching an online class: synchronous and asynchronous. In order to compare synchronous and asynchronous learning, I created this table and included examples of how the content can be delivered.

Type of Delivery
What is it?
Examples
Synchronous Delivery
Teachers and students are involved in real-time interaction. Teachers and students must be online at the same time to participate in synchronous delivery methods.
·         Skype
·         Video Conferencing
·         Chat Rooms
·         Virtual Classrooms
·         Telephone Calls
Asynchronous Delivery
Teachers provide materials, lessons, activities, etc. for students to access and complete within a certain amount of time. Students and teachers do not have to be online at the same time.
·         Discussion Boards
·         Blogs
·         Online Forums
·         Email
·         Online Classroom Platforms
